The new limited traffic areas (Ztl) in town will become effective as of May 5, 2008. Mayor Diego Cammarata, has signed this zoning ordinance with the objective of containing air pollution in urban areas characterized by intense vehicular traffic.

As other Italian and European cities, Palermo uses an Optical Recognition system of the license plate numbers of all the cars in transit inside the limited traffic areas.

This system was created to improve the environmental quality and to develope an ecologically sustainable circulation; reducing pollution; protecting and re-qualifying the most valuable architectural, historical and urban areas of the city.
